(This post is written for alumni of LEAD365, although all are welcome to read it.)

One of the things we want to do with the Leadership Matters blog is to keep you in the loop of new things we’ve added to LEAD 365 since you participated. In this spirit I want to let you know we just added a new exercise to help our leaders gain more clarity about their own sweet spot. The process is pretty simple and probably hard to do. We are asking each participant to spend a couple hours engaging the following steps:
  1. Reflect back on your life and list the key people, the key experiences, and the key situations that likely helped shape who you are today.
  2. What are some of the key lessons you learned about yourself and about life through these people, experiences, and situations?
  3. What are some core beliefs you have (things you know are true but can’t prove) that came from these people, experiences, and situations? What other core beliefs do you have? Are any of your beliefs preferred and not actual? (Meaning that you struggle to truly live into them even though you have a strong desire to do so.)
  4. What are the some core values you have (things that are especially important to you and also direct how you behave) that came from the beliefs stated in your answer to #3? What other core values do you have? Are any of these values preferred rather than actual values?
  5. When you look back over your life, what passions are evident? What things do you make time for even when you don’t really have the time? When do you lose track of time because you’re so engrossed in what you’re doing?
  6. What gifts/strengths/talents do you think you naturally have? What do people tell you you’re really good at? What did you learn more quickly and easily than others?
  7. When you look at the things you believe, the things you value, the passions you have, and the gifts you possess, where do you see some intersection?
  8. What activities and tasks fit in this intersection?
  9. How can those activities make you better in the role you currently play?
  10. What other roles might align with those activities?
  11. What insights has this exercise prompted in you?
  12. What wonderings are stirring up in you?

If you choose to dive into it, we hope you find new clarity about how to pursue and leverage your own sweet spot.

Happy diving!
